Flu News

Interesting news about bird flu which hasn't really been reported in the press, which is having far too much fun trying to scare the living piss out of everyone: those guys who recreated the 1918 spanish flu discovered that it had no similarities to the HN51 virus, or any other bird disease. Genetically, its completely different. So, thinking that perhaps this virus could have become HN51 through extensive mutations, they tested lung tissue samples of preserved birds from 1918 and found a lot of viruses that were almost genetically identical to HN51. This means that, because birds don't have much of an immune system, bird flu viruses haven't really had to mutate for almost a century and the idea that they might mutate now into a form that could spread between humans is about as likely as me becoming Pope(I thought about applying.) So, panic over, eh?
Wrong. Because now the best theory about the emergence of the last flu pandemic, that it originated in birds, has now gone out the window. The next best explanation is the celebrated "er...we don't know" theory. So, while governments around the world are putting all their resources towards fighting a centuries old, non-mutating red herring, another killer flu could just pop out of no-where and catch us with our proverbial pants down. Well, at least I'll be ready for it. I'm having my headstone done. I want the inscription to include the word 'fuck' in some capacity.
